Combination of nature-based solutions and engineered technologies needed alongside decarbonisation to meet global climate goals, thinktank says in report
Efforts to remove carbon emissions from the atmosphere through nature-based solutions and other technologies need to scale up massively over the next three decades if the world is to limit cumulative net emissions to a level compatible with globally agreed climate objectives, according to thinktank the Energy Transitions Commission (ETC). In addition to decarbonising, the world needs to sequester 165Gt CO₂ by 2050 at a cost of around $15tn to limit global warming to 1.5°C, the ETC says in a report titled Mind the Gap: How Carbon Dioxide Removals Must Complement Deep Decarbonisation to Keep 1.5°C Alive.
