Europe can accelerate offshore wind deployment – Orsted
Existing targets can be exceeded if governments streamline consent process and stop trying to monetise development rights, says Danish energy company
Europe could realistically deploy 35pc more offshore wind capacity than governments are targeting by 2035, according to Danish energy company Orsted. Europe has the potential to add 60GW to its existing 2035 target, potentially raising capacity in 2035 to 230GW, up from about 25GW in operation, according to Orsted’s analysis of government policy. “This additional capacity is not an easy feat. It will require a whole new approach to offshore wind and politics, development and delivery,” says Orsted CEO Mads Nipper. To achieve this increase, governments would need to fast-track existing projects and streamline the permitting process, allocating enough offshore acreage to enable the large scale
