Ashgabat’s ambitions appear to mesh well with China’s growing appetite for gas
Turkmenistan wants to boost gas output and exports by unlocking more production from its massive Galkynysh field. This would represent an ambitious ramp-up by Central Asia’s top producer that would align with burgeoning gas demand from primary buyer China, where the market for the fuel is forecast to continue growing for another decade. Turkmenistan aims to boost output to 116bcm/yr by 2029, more than half of which is earmarked for exports, Rustem Tekayev, head of the gas transportation and supply department at state-owned gas company Turkmengaz, said at the Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan 2024 conference in Ashgabat at the end of October.
