Norway: First awards of new licences
THE PETROLEUM and Energy Ministry awarded the first of its 'pre-defined area' (PDA) licences in December—the system was introduced last summer for licensing blocks in mature areas. Norsk Hydro and Statoil were the most successful in terms of operatorships, winning six and four respectively. Talisman and Marathon each gained two while ExxonMobil, DNO, BP, BG and Paladin each secured one. The 19 licences (see Table 1) cover 39 blocks or part-blocks, all in the North Sea and Haltenbanken areas. The aim of the new licensing system, which replaced the former 'North Sea awards', is to stimulate exploration in the vicinity of existing infrastructure.
