Heavy oil shut in as Canada wildfires spread
More than 100,000 barrels a day (b/d) off stream
WILDFIRES sweeping across northern Alberta and floods in southern Manitoba halted combined heavy-oil production of more than 100,000 barrels a day (b/d) in the two provinces this week. The blazes also halted clean-up work at a 28,000 barrel pipeline spill in northwestern Alberta. The Alberta fires forced Cenovus Energy to shut in about half of production at its 22,000 b/d Pelican Lake heavy-oil field; Penn West Exploration suspended heavy-oil production of 25,000-30,000 b/d in north-central Alberta, while 10,000-15,000 b/d of its Manitoba production was affected by flooding; and Canadian Natural Resources (CNR), having already shut in 3,125 b/d in Alberta, was faced with shutting down the 40
