BP reckless over Macondo spill, says Judge
The spill created the worst offshore environmental disaster in US history
BP has been found grossly negligent by a US federal judge over the 2010 Macondo disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, leaving it liable to pay up to $18 billion in further costs associated with the deadly blowout and subsequent oil spill. The ruling was made on 4 September by Judge Carl Barbier, who held a trial without a jury, in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. The court found that BP was grossly negligent regarding the incident and that its activities at the Macondo well amounted to "willful misconduct". The judge ruled BP was 67% responsible for the disaster, while Transocean, the rig's owner, and Halliburton, which was responsible for the ill-fated wells cement job
