UK Coal will close Kellingley Colliery in Yorkshire Thoresby Colliery in Nottinghamshire
The UK government has announced it will loan £10 million ($16.7m) to UK Coal to aid the closure of two of the country's remaining deep mines. UK Coal said that the "managed run down" of Kellingley Colliery, in Yorkshire, and Thoresby Colliery, in Nottinghamshire, would take place over the next 18 months. The company went into administration last year after rising costs, pension liabilities and competition from cheaper foreign coal imports left it struggling to compete. The closure will leave the UK with just one active deep coal mine, employee-owned Hatfield Colliery in South Yorkshire.
