EU to give biojet industry new thrust

A new sustainable aviation proposal is set to supercharge so-far fledgling efforts

It is notoriously hard to cut carbon emissions from planes. But many are betting on biofuels, including the EU, which is likely to propose minimum blending levels for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as well as taxes on traditional jet fuel in Europe this summer. The proposal will give the biojet industry a new thrust—a boon for green fuel producers—and a nudge to conventional refiners to heed the transition or brave the threat of obsolescence. “Given that SAF costs more than fossil jet fuel, there need to be mechanisms to help bridge the price gap—either incentives and/or mandates—with disincentives for non-compliance,” Jonathan Wood, vice president of renewable aviation at Finnish firm Nest
