Oil and gas firm Repsol and Spanish airline Iberia have completed Spain’s first flight using biofuel from waste. The hour-long IB426 flight between Madrid and Bilbao used a 2pc blend of biofuel with conventional jet fuel. The flight was performed by an Airbus A320neo, an aircraft with engines designed to emit 5,000t/yr less CO₂ and 50pc less nitrogen oxides, and which employs procedures to improve fuel efficiency during the climb and descent phases. Repsol and Iberia say these measures abated 1.4t CO₂ emissions from the flight.
