UK CCS clusters vie for first-phase funding

Six clusters have been developed—but not all of them meet the ideal criteria for the initial round of state funding

Four industrial clusters around the UK are in the running to be selected in the first phase of the government’s carbon capture usage and storage (CCUS) funding programme, according to industry experts. As part of a ten-point plan outlined in December, the UK announced it would provide £1bn ($1.4bn) to support the development of industrial CCUS clusters around the country. In the first phase, two industrial clusters will be established by the mid-2020s and, in the second phase, a further two by 2030. Together, these phases would capture 10mn t of CO2/yr.
