MEPs vote nuclear and gas as sustainable
European Parliament fails to reject Commission proposal to define some nuclear and natural gas power as sustainable
The European Parliament has voted to include nuclear and natural gas in the EU definition of “environmentally sustainable economic activities” under certain conditions. Parliament did not object to the European Commission’s Taxonomy Delegated Act to include specific nuclear and natural gas energy activities in its taxonomy of what can be defined as sustainable for investment purposes. The Commission believes there is a role for private investment in natural gas and nuclear in the green transition, and has proposed the classification of certain fossil gas and nuclear energy activities as contributing to climate change mitigation—depending on specific conditions and transparency requirements.
