Google partners with Fervo on geothermal

Firms hope that tapping geothermal energy will help Google’s operations become completely decarbonised

Google is partnering with Fervo Energy to develop a new geothermal energy project in Nevada, where its server infrastructure is located. The announcement came at the company’s annual developer conference, known as I/O, where Google CEO Sundar Pichai explained the firm’s ambitions to be carbon-neutral. “We were the first to match our operations with 100pc with renewable energy, in 2017, and we have been doing it ever since,” said Pichai, adding that the firm wanted to go beyond matching to operating continuously without emissions.  “Operating 24/7 is a step-change from current approaches. It means setting a higher bar,” he added. Google hopes that tapping geothermal energy will help with that
