Small-scale solar plays big role in US market as installers ramp growth and pursue home batteries
Rooftop solar installer Sunrun reported strong growth last week, highlighting small-scale solar’s big role in the US market. The company ended the first quarter of 2021 with over half a million customers, growing that base by 18pc over the previous year. And despite the labour crunch hitting other industries—and even some firms in the solar sector—Sunrun raised its overall growth guidance for this year from 20-25pc to 25-30pc. Data from the EIA shows US small-scale solar continues to track at roughly half the market generation share of utility-scale solar. Small-scale solar generated 34.96TWh compared with big solar’s 68.72TWh. And in 2020, small-scale generated 41.47TWh to big solar’s 87.74
