New capacity is driving up green power production and lowering emissions despite higher coal burn in Europe, IEA says
Global renewable power generation is on course to rise by more than 10pc this year, outpacing the expansion of electricity demand and, as a result, slightly lowering power sector emissions despite increased coal burn in Europe amid the Russian gas crisis, according to the IEA. The increase in renewable generation is driven by “strong” capacity additions globally, the IEA says. Power sector CO₂ emissions hit record highs in 2021 but will drop this year, albeit by less than 1pc. Emissions intensity is set to fall by more than 2pc, the IEA says. Global electricity demand is expected to grow by 2.4pc in 2022, moving back into line with the average over the five years before the Covid-19 pandemic
