The world will likely need to capture and either store or use at least 7gt CO₂/yr by 2050 to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, according to a report by thinktank the Energy Transitions Commission (ETC). This will require a rapid scale-up from the 37mn t/yr of carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) operating today. Achieving this growth will require high levels of political and financial commitment following a decade in which the number of operating plants has grown very slowly and many announced projects have been mothballed or abandoned.
