The US overtook Australia to become the world’s largest LNG exporter in the first half of 2022, EIA data shows, with nearly two-thirds of its volumes going to allies in Europe. US LNG exports from January to June were up by 12pc year-on-year at an average of 11.2bn ft³/d (317.1mn m³/d). EIA attributed the gains to increased export capacity, higher prices “and increased global demand, particularly in Europe”. On the demand side, combined EU and UK LNG imports increased in the first half of 2022 by 63pc year-on-year, to average 14.8bn ft³/d, as the region sought to rebuild low inventories despite reduced pipeline flows from Russia.
